How to care for your clay vessel
Clay rewards patient care. Follow these simple guidelines and your pot will outlast everything else in your kitchen.
Hand wash only. Never place clay in a dishwasher.
Warm water, soft cloth. Wash with warm water and a soft sponge. Soak 30 min for stubborn residue.
No soap on unglazed clay. Soap penetrates the porous surface. Rinse with clean water only.
Air dry completely before storing. Trapped moisture causes mold and can crack the vessel on next heating.
Season before first use. Soak in water 12 hours, rub with garlic, heat gently on stovetop 30 min. Let cool. Repeat once.
Microwave: No. Natural metal ions can spark. Sudden heat stresses the vessel.
Oven: Yes, with care. Always start in a cold oven. Never put cold clay into a preheated oven.
Stovetop: Yes, on low to medium. Start on lowest setting and gradually increase heat.
Induction: Only with an adapter. Clay is not magnetic. Use an induction heat diffuser plate.
Storage: Store in a dry, ventilated space. Do not stack without padding.

Important precautions
Clay is a natural material with natural limitations. Understanding these makes you a better steward of your vessel.
Clay cannot withstand sudden, drastic changes in temperature. Never place a hot vessel on a cold surface, never pour cold water into a hot pot, and never move from oven to refrigerator directly.
Terracotta is ceramic — it will crack or break if dropped. Handle with care, store away from high-traffic areas, and always place on a flat, stable surface.
Unglazed clay is porous. It absorbs liquids, odors, and soaps. Avoid strongly acidic preparations (tomatoes, citrus) in a new, unsealed vessel, and never use soaps without thorough rinsing.
Traditional Mexican glazed ceramics sometimes used lead-based glazes. Our unglazed and engobe pieces contain no glaze of any kind — no lead risk. All Zenit Materia pieces are tested and certified food-safe.
"Our clay is pure. No glaze, no chemicals, no compromise."
Every new clay vessel must be seasoned before first use. Submerge in clean water for 12 hours. Rub with a cut garlic clove. Heat on very low heat for 30 minutes. Let cool. Repeat once.
Because each piece is hand-formed and wood-fired, no two vessels are identical. Slight variations in color, texture, and shape are not defects — they are the signatures of the artisan's hands and the kiln's fire.
"The imperfection is the proof that a human made it."
What clay can do
The definitive vessel for slow-cooked frijoles. Clay's porosity keeps beans at perfect moisture while absorbing broth flavors.
Long-simmered broths develop extraordinary body and depth in clay. The vessel's thermal mass maintains a steady, gentle simmer.
Arroz a la mexicana cooked in clay absorbs liquid evenly, resulting in individual grains that are perfectly cooked.
Gentle, enveloping heat breaks down collagen over hours, producing fall-apart tenderness.
The molcajete's rough volcanic surface breaks down ingredients at a cellular level.
Clay keeps drinks warm far longer than ceramic mugs while adding a mineral note that enhances cinnamon and chocolate.
The wide surface and even heat allow slow reduction without burning the chili-chocolate base.
"Clay does not rush. And neither should your food."
